SPIDER PLANT

Chlorophytum Comosum

Batanicle Name:  (Chlorophytum Comosum )

Spider plants are extremely easy to grow, making them the perfect houseplant for beginners, frequent travelers, absent-minded individuals, college students, and, well, just about anyone.  Their name refers to the tiny plantlets dangling from wiry stems that resemble spiders floating on a bit of web.  Whole plants are composed of loose rosettes of leaves that grow from fleshy underground tubers.  Common leaf colors include solid light green and variegated dark green with a white center stripe.

Grow spider plants indoors in bright, indirect light.  Most types tolerate low light conditions, but plants will grow faster if given lighter.  Keep out of direct sunlight, though, as they can cause the foliage to scorch. Gardeners living in zones 10-12 can grow spider plants outside as groundcovers, in partial to full shade locations.

Spider plants are excellent for growing in hanging baskets because of their fountain-like habit and trailing plantlets.  Select a container that is no more than one-third larger than the root ball of your plant.  Fill the container one-third of the way with a quality Indoor Potting Mix, designed to be less prone to gnats (it contains no compost or bark to shelter them), a common issue with spider plants.  The mix also contains coconut coir, which holds and releases water to help maintain even moisture.

Place the plant in the container so that the top of the root ball is about 3/4 to 1 inch below the top of the container.  That will leave space to water the plant without the water running over the sides of the pot.  Fill in around the root ball.  Thoroughly water the plant and let it drain, then move to its permanent location in the house.

Spider plants can be grown outdoors as annuals during the summer, but you must bring them indoors before the first frost or when the temperature drops below 50 degrees.

Ideal Preferences

Water

water them well but do not allow the plants to become too soggy,  When young, they need moist soil. Spider plants are sensitive to the fluoride and chlorine in city water, so they perform best with rain water or distilled water, which can lead to root rot.  Spider Plants prefer to dry out some between watering.  Add water when the top 1 inch  (2.5 cm) or so of soil is dry, it's time to water your spider plant.  Water moderately or once per week

Avoid too much watering, overwatering is a cause of spider plant leaves turning black or dark brown.  The soil should dry out slightly between irrigations.

Light

Spider plants prefer filtered sunlight, but can grow in part-shade to shade.  They tend to get sunburnt in full sun or afternoon hot sun.  Bright, to moderate indirect light, but Spider Plants can grow in bright indoor light and they will flourish indoors or outdoors in spring or summer in shaded area

Soil

Spider plants need slightly acidic soil potting soil in a container with good drainage.  Use a good 10-10-10 fertilizer only once a month or bi-monthly.  A liquid plant food is suitable for the Spider Plant.

Hardiness (min.)

Zone 8b -9.4 °C (15 °F) to -6.7 °C (20 °F)

Propagation

Spider plant propagation: cut off spiderette place in water until roots  grow for them and plant in potting soil.  Also, plant the spiderette in a pot filled with any lightweight potting mix. Be sure the pot has drainage holes in the bottom.  You can leave the baby  attached to the parent plant until the new plant akes root, then separate it from the parent by snipping the runner.

Blooms

The plant sends out fine white delicate flowers in the summer and small baby spider plants grow out of these flowers. The flowers are quite small – only about 1″ in size and look a bit like a miniature lily.
