Coleus

Botanical Name – (Solenostemon scutellarioides)

'Wizard Scarlet Coleus

Wizard Scarlet Coleus is a showy annual having dark red leaves with a narrow yellow-green margin.  Lighter red veins run through the serrated heart-shaped leaves. Coleus is a tropical plant grown as a summer annual for its variously colored foliage.  Foliage colors range from green to bronze, pink, white, yellow-green, and red.  The small, blue to white, Salvia-like flowers are insignificant.  Coleus performs best in moist well drained soil in shaded locations, but can adapt to lesser sites.  Wizard Scarlet Coleus is heat tolerant but not particularly drought tolerant.

The coleus plant is vibrantly, sometimes multi-colored vegetation plant, and can grow as either a ground covering, a border, or to grow up a trellis as well as grow in a container.  The many different colors of coleus make it an attractive plant for many gardeners.  But watch out, coleus plants will wilt if you don't care for the properly.  To prevent your coleus from wilting follow these basic guidelines.

Dennis's Greem Thumb Tip

Wizard Scarlet Coleus is an herbaceous annual with an upright spreading habit of growth.  Its medium texture blends into the garden, balance the plant by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance plant.  The flowers of this plant may detract from its ornamental features, so remove them as they appear.  Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats.  It has no significant negative characteristics.

Winter Scarlet Ideal Preferences

Water

Keep soil moist but well drained, do not allow coleus to stand in water.  Container plants also require more frequent watering than those grown in the garden.

Humidity

Beware; when the Coleus receives too much wind and sun, it can dry out quickly.  Small browning around the edges of the leaves and a general drooping is a sign that it is drying out.  A humidity tray and watering the plant brings back its’ vibrancy.

Fertilizer

Give the Coleus a boost of half-strength liquid fertilizer during their active growth in spring and summer.

Light

part shade and/or sun (Moring sun if placed in part sun) to full shade

Soil

As a houseplant, plant the Ti Plant in a potting mixture that holds moisture without remaining soggy in a well drainage container.  A high-quality commercial potting mixture works well, or you can create your own from a mixture of 1-part sand, 1-part perlite, and 2 parts peat moss, (see: mix your own soil)  Use a sturdy pot with a drainage hole in the bottom.

Hardiness (min.)

Keep the plant above 60 Fahrenheit (in cold zones) (Find your  (hardness zone).

Propagation

Plant seeds or grow from 3-4-inch clippings of a mature plant.  Snip the stem just below the leaf node, and place it in water or pot them in potting soil after dipping the cutting in rooting hormone. Pinch out the center of the stem for control and bushiness, see Pinching plants.  Repot when roots become root bound.  You can divide the plants root-ball to start new plants

Blooms:  At maturity, the plant produces flowers at the end of the stems, which if left of the plant, it will grow producing seed.  Collect the seed and plant next season.  To keep the plant growing, pinch out the flower shut so that it may not come to see.
