Botanical Name: Sunset Boulevard - Main Street Series

Plectranthus scutellarioides (syn. Solenostemon

The Main St. Rodeo Drive is an annual foliage that can survive in full sun or full shade if the soil remains moist to the touch, and the plant’s soil does not dry out.

Foliage: Each Main Street coleus variety boasts different colored/patterned foliage.   A few color highlights:

  • ‘Broadway’: Red-purple leaves with golden margins

  • ‘Sunset Boulevard’: Pale pink leaves with a very wide golden tan margin

  • ‘Wall Street’: Solid deep copper

  • ‘Michigan Avenue’: Dark red leaves splattered and edged with green

  • ‘Fifth Avenue’: Hot pink centers framed in purple with a green margin

  • ‘Rodeo Drive’: Lime green with purple veining and edges

  • ‘River Walk’: Bright mottled yellow and green

Main Street Coleus’ stunning lime green leaves with a ruffled deep mahogany edge overlaid with freckles. This entire series produces perfectly shaped heat tolerant plants that thrive in all light conditions.  Deer resistant.  Also makes a great house move  plant indoors to a warm room before frost to over-winter.   All Main Street coleus have an upright growth habit and reaches a height and spreads about 24.

How to grow Main Street coleus:  Site in fertile soil with good drainage.  Provide even moisture.  Coleus is not drought tolerant, though it will bounce back from a brief lapse in watering.  Main Street coleus varieties performed equally well in sun and shade and in the ground or containers, especially in grouping of other plants requiring the same growing condition.

Wizard Scarlet Coleus is an herbaceous annual with an upright spreading habit of growth.  Its medium texture blends into the garden, balance the plant by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition.

This is a relatively low maintenance plant.  The flowers of this plant may detract from its ornamental features, so remove them as they appear.  Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats.  It has no significant negative characteristics.

Winter Scarlet Ideal Preferences

Water

Keep soil moist but well drained, do not allow coleus to stand in water.  Container plants also require more frequent watering than those grown in the garden.

Humidity

Beware; when the Coleus receives too much wind and sun, it can dry out quickly.  Small browning around the edges of the leaves and a general drooping is a sign that it is drying out.  A humidity tray and watering the plant brings back its’ vibrancy.

Fertilizer

Feed regularly a quality plant food for maximum growth potential

Light

part shade and/or sun (Moring sun if placed in part sun) to full shade

Soil

As a houseplant, plant the Ti Plant in a potting mixture that holds moisture without remaining soggy in a well drainage container.  A high-quality commercial potting mixture works well, or you can create your own from a mixture of 1-part sand, 1-part perlite, and 2 parts peat moss, (see: mix your own soil)  Use a sturdy pot with a drainage hole in the bottom.

Hardiness (min.)

Keep the plant above 60 Fahrenheit (in cold zones) (Find your  (hardness zone).

Propagation

Plant seeds or grow from 3-4-inch clippings of a mature plant.  Snip the stem just below the leaf node, and place it in water or pot them in potting soil after dipping the cutting in rooting hormone. Pinch out the center of the stem for control and bushiness, see Pinching plants.  Repot when roots become root bound.  You can divide the plants root-ball to start new plants

Blooms:  At maturity, the plant produces flowers at the end of the stems, which if left of the plant, it will grow producing seed.  Collect the seed and plant next season.  To keep the plant growing, pinch out the flower shut so that it may not come to see.
